The History of the Lunar Owners Club
How It All Began
The Lunar Owners Club was founded in January 1976 by a group of dedicated Lunar caravan enthusiasts. United by their passion for caravanning, they formed a committee, wrote a Constitution, and launched the Club’s very first rally programme. By the end of the second season, the first Annual General Meeting (AGM) was held, marking the start of a proud tradition that continues today.
Early Rallies and Rapid Growth
The Club’s very first rally took place at Corse Lawn in Gloucestershire, attracting Lunar caravan owners who were heading to the National Rally. With extra support from the caravan press, word spread quickly, and membership grew at an incredible pace.
By July 1976, the second rally was held in Weston-super-Mare, followed by a third in Leyland. Around 25 caravans attended that year, and by the close of 1976, membership had already reached 99.
In these early years, the Club introduced rally plaques for members attending 25 rallies and launched a regular newsletter to keep everyone informed. Rallies typically ran from Friday evenings through Sunday afternoons, with longer Bank Holiday weekends proving popular. Over time, these expanded into extended rallies lasting up to five days.
Celebrating Milestones
The Lunar Owners Club has always enjoyed celebrating its achievements:
-
21st rally – Easter 1979 at Highbridge
-
100th rally – Oxford, 1984
-
30th Anniversary – 2006
-
600th rally – 2007
-
700th rally – Uttoxeter Racecourse, 2012
-
40th Anniversary rally – 2016
-
800th rally – Uttoxeter Racecourse, 2017
Each event brought together members from across the UK, strengthening the Club’s community spirit.
Taking Caravanning Overseas
In 1982, the Club held its very first overseas caravan rally in France. This marked the beginning of a long tradition of international adventures. Since then, members have enjoyed European caravan holidays in France, Holland, Germany, Belgium, and Switzerland. Today, overseas rallies remain a highlight of our calendar, with many expertly organised by Alan Rogers Rallies.
Growth, Challenges, and Resilience
In 2003, when Lunar Caravans was briefly owned by a Dutch holding company that also manufactured Chateau caravans, membership was opened to Chateau caravan owners, broadening the community.
The year 2020 brought challenges with the closure of Lunar Caravans and the impact of COVID-19. While activities were temporarily reduced, the Lunar Owners Club remained independent, with no commercial ties to Lunar Caravans Limited. By 2023, rallies were once again running at full strength with excellent attendance.
Looking Forward
The future of the Lunar Owners Club is brighter than ever. With an exciting rally programme planned for 2024 and beyond, we continue to welcome new members who share a love of Lunar caravans, caravanning holidays, and making lifelong friendships.
